Woocommerce Order section column Origin
-
Hello there,
Recently, we discovered a new column in the WooCommerce order section called “Origin.” However, all the values in this column appear as “unknown.” We are utilizing a multisite setup with Order Attribution enabled, located under WooCommerce -> Settings -> Advanced -> Features. Additionally, we are using product types “simple” and “virtual.” Please advise.

Hi @hajakutbudeen,
Once you enable Order Attribution Tracking after updating to WooCommerce 8.5, you can access its data for all the orders you generate afterward. However, the origin might appear as unknown for orders created before you enabled this feature.
More info can be found here: https://woo.com/document/order-attribution-tracking/
I hope this clarifies your concern. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.
Hey @shameemreza
Thanks for your reply. I updated the WooCommerce version to 8.5.1 three days ago. Since then, we have been receiving more orders, but the origin value for all of them is shown as unknown. Is there anything I need to configure for multisite?
Hi there @hajakutbudeen ??
Thank you for reaching back, clarifying things further.
Recently, we discovered a new column in the WooCommerce order section called “Origin.” However, all the values in this column appear as “unknown.”
Just to clarify, what payment gateway/option is in use for these orders?
When testing, on a test WooCommerce multisite installation of mine, with one of the core payment methods for WooCommerce (COD, to be precise), the
Origin
column was populated with the term Direct.Below, I am attaching a screenshot, for reference.
I hope this is helpful! Please let us know if you have any further questions about this matter, or if we misinterpret your concern in any way. We will be happy to help you further.
Hello @anastas10s
Thanks for your reply, can you explain how this will work? i mean which data origin analyse and use is that linked with google analytics ? or something so that i can understand if there is any of our custom code make issue or not here is our current order section for your ref , we are using multiple payment gateway like tabby, checkout.com etc i tried cod option also i received same unknown value https://snipboard.io/94n3Uc.jpg
HI @hajakutbudeen,
The “Origin” column in the Orders section is meant to display the source from where the order came from. That means if the order came directly from your site, it should show as “Direct”. If it came from an external source, it could show as “Referral” or “Unknown” if the source couldn’t be determined.
Additionally, the Origin/Order Attribution feature is not currently linked with Google Analytics or other external tracking tools. It’s a standalone feature within WooCommerce core.
However, since you mentioned that you’re using multiple payment gateways and custom codes, this could be why the Order Attributes feature might not be able to detect the source. It could be due to the cookies, cache, custom codes, or gateway. This could be why all your orders are showing as “Unknown”, as the source can’t be tracked.
Rest assured, I ran tests in two different scenarios. In the first scenario, I used the latest version of WC with the Storefront theme. In the second scenario, I updated WC from an older version using the Storefront theme again. Both scenarios were part of a multisite network. I’m happy to report that everything worked perfectly, as in the test scenario listed here: https://woo.com/document/order-attribution-tracking/#section-8
I hope this clarifies your concern. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.
Can we build reports in woo from these captured origins? and does it use cookies to capture? no more third party plugins for me.
can we also add origin to notification email of the sale?
Hello @map,
As this thread is already marked as resolved, I suggest that you start a new thread with your case, so that we don’t mix several troubleshooting sessions in one thread.
Thanks.
Hello,
I have the same problem as @hajakutbudeen. All purchases (except tag assistant) are marked as “unknown”. I am running a G.Ads campaign – I had a purchase, the values match, however the origin in Woo is “unknown”. I am using Cookiebot plugin. Should I somehow configure the consent appropriately?I am also having the same issue. Its working fine on one of my websites but not the other. The feature is enabled but yet its still not working?
Hi @joner2312 and @damniano,
Do you use the standard checkout or block on the checkout page? Does your theme or a particular plugin modify the checkout page and process?
Please note that Order Attribution adds extra fields to the standard checkout and block checkout to append the source data to the order when it’s processed. If you are using a custom checkout, that’s likely why you are seeing?Unknown.
If you are using standard or block checkout, and nothing has been customized on the checkout page, head over to WooCommerce → Status → Tools, and do the following:
- WooCommerce transients – Clear
- Expired transients – Clear
- Clear template cache – Clear
- Capabilities – Reset Capabilities
- Clear customer sessions -Clear
- Clear server and site cache.
Next, please clear your browser cache and place another order to test whether the origin shows correctly or not.
I hope this clarifies your concern. Let us know how that goes.
I just wanted to express my “Thanks” for adding this customer origin feature. I never activated anything per se, but I just noticed this feature and being able to see the origins of my customers dating back to mid January 2024 is great! It’s a great feature that I find completely invaluable. Who knew I would get so many customers from Reddit!?
Thanks again!
