how to add content blocks to 2010 index page

  • Dear Forum,
    I would like to slightly change the layout of the 2010 theme. I’d like to have on post the full width of the content area, but limit the number of characters it displays.

    Secondly I would like to have two conten blocks under that full width one, side by side, with a gutter between them.

    Would someone please tell me how to this?
