Problem migrating wp to new server

    I’m trying to switch my wp site to a new server (same domain name) and found the codex advice very unhelpful. I backed up the wp files and database, made a new database on the new server, and filled in the wp-config.php file with the new database info. I then tried to upload the old database file into the new one and got an error message. I know I have to alter the old database sql file in order to get it to work on the new server but I am at a loss – help!
