WordFence has slowed my site down…

    While the latest update slowed down the ACP a great deal, it also slowed down the front page – but not nearly as much. I work REALLY hard to make my pages load reasonably quickly.

    I’m using Wordfence Version: 7.11.4.

    It did throw some errors in Query Monitor and it took 20+ seconds to load pages in the admin section. I noticed the errors and did some looking around. I probably should have taken a screenshot or jotted the errors down but I did not.

    With some trepidation, I disabled Wordfence.

    My page load speeds immediately returned to normal.

    But…

    I did try enabling it again and my page loads are back within the ‘normal’ range.

    So, it’d appear that disabling the plugin (keeping the existing settings) and re-enabling the plugin somehow magically fixed things.

    I figured I’d share this information, for whatever it is worth. It is above my pay grade to know why disabling/enabling the plugin seems to have resolved the issue, but I figured I’d share in case others noticed a massive slowdown – especially within the Admin Control Panel.

    Hi @uninvolved, Thank you for reaching out.

    We are constantly working on making the plugin faster, perform better, and use less resources. There are not set amounts of RAM, CPU or database queries that we know Wordfence will definitely require in each use-case or hosting environment. The cases of slow-down are small in relation to the quantity of customers using Wordfence, but does crop up from time to time with certain configurations or larger databases/number of installed plugins.

    You could also set max_execution_time = 60 in php.ini, Wordfence’s scan only ever attempts to use half of this value by default.

    Your WP_MEMORY_LIMIT should be set to 128M or 256M in wp-config.php. WooCommerce, for example, recommends 64M minimum (and I often see only 48M in site diagnostics), so if you also have many hits on the site at once especially during a Wordfence scan, a lower limit here could be reached fairly easily. Your PHP memory_limit value should be set to 128M or 256M also to accommodate this change.
