• Hi, I am a complete novice to wp so this question may be really obvious to some people. I am a freelance front end designer and I have a client that would like me to set up their wp site. I have purchased a theme from themeforest and want to set it all up now. My client will be hosting the site through their companies hosting provider, however for the initial set up, tweaking and testing what is the best solution for me. I do not really want to host it directly on to their server while I am setting it up as I do not want to mess anything up. So if I use my hosting provider or a third party one can I transfer all the info, tweaks and amends once I am happy with the site to the companies server without having redo anything?

    Thanks

  • Other than the change in URL — your test site to the real domain name on your client’s server — you basically only have to copy the files and database from your test site to your client’s server. Only complication would be if there is a large difference in the software environment. Beyond the obvious ones, like Linux to Windows Server, there are more subtle ones like php and MySQL versions and extensions, not to mention Apache.

Personally, I would be asking your client if they can give you a test environment. It need not be isolated from any of their other test web sites, as WordPress can be installed into a subfolder.

That would eliminate differences in other software.

In either case (on your own test site or theirs), the final process is the same, so you may want to read this:
