    Hi,

I am setting up a new network, domains haven’t been redirected yet so it’s being built on host temp domain. I have setup and worked on 3 subdirectory sites that are working fine. But when I got to the main site under pages and posts it says # published, but doesn’t show the list and on live test site I get 404 page error. Any ideas why this may be?

    Thanks,

    Dana

Is your .htaccess set up right? That’s a common point of breaking.

What do I look for or change? Do I need to talk to host support?

That would be in main public_html right? I don’t see it? And what is protocol to post, use code/text link above?

Well if there’s no .htaccess then that would be a problem :). It’s required for Multisite.

When you set up multisite, it PROMPTS you to update the .htaccess. Go into your main site’s admin side and go into Network settings. In there it’ll have a link for what you should have in your .htaccess

Ok, I got the info from the settings. How do I create a .htaccess file?

By the way thank you for all your help, this is awesome.

First you should turn on invisible files in your FTP app.

An .htaccess file is one that is simply named .htaccess – just the period and the htaccess and that’s it.

But the best bit is that it’s just a file. You edit it in a text editor, just like anything else.

You may find it easier to make the file in your FTP app, though, since it’ll show the file.

You can google “how do I make an .htaccess file” and there are a lot of docs out there about it,

I am back. I added the .htaccess file and still no pages, posts or media appear in the main site. Again, everything is working for sub-directory sites. Anything else it could be?

Try switching back to Twenty Ten for your theme.

A link to your site woudl help.

still no pages, posts or media appear in the main site.

Sorry, this isn’t specific enough. It could mean anything from – the theme is there but no content, or the theme is completely unstyled, or there’s a white screen. Each one of these is completely different.

    Hi Andrea,

I edit the local host file on my computer to build, so don’t know how to give you the URL. If you now how I can do that, I’d be more than happy too. Would it help if I send screenshots? If so, how?

The theme looks fine it’s just a 404 page error on the front-end and when I got to pages, posts or media it’ll say X # of pages but no list of pages, just blank. So I could go into edit them. So it’s styled and everything theme-wise seems to be working, but I just can’t see content on main site. Sub-directories are working great.

I am using this theme: https://www.primothemes.com/post/product/s2clean-theme-for-wordpress/ along with s2member plugin. I have added content to the main site and sub-directory sites.

I am having the same issue, just installed MU. I have only installed the main wordpress, no sub blogs yet, but the main one only looks for pages and posts with the /blog/ before it… all works if i use the default permanlinks, but i need to use custom structure /%postname%/… any ideas out there?

@dskallman – set it back to TewntyTen and disable your plguins and see if it works.

@jetpress – no, that’s a different issue. The main blog gets a /blog/ inserted in the permalinks to prevent collisions between page names and blog names. We’ve gone over this extensively here in the forums.

    You’re awesome Andrea, that worked.

    Thanks!
