• Hi there -

    For the past few days, I've been receiving emails from WP informing me of a critical error. Originally, the error was to do with the Social Stickers plugin (now deleted). Now a new error has been caught by WP - 'with your theme, Headway Base'.

    I can't access my website, wp-admin page or recovery page - but I can get to the cPanel. But what to do from there?!

    Error Details
    =============
    An error of type E_ERROR was caused in line 29 of the file /(redacted info)/wp-content/themes/headway/library/api/api-admin-meta-box.php.

    Error message: Uncaught Error: Call to undefined function create_function() in /(redacted info)/wp-content/themes/headway/library/api/api-admin-meta-box.php:29

    WordPress version 6.5
    Active theme: Headway Base (version 3.8.8)
    Current plugin: ?(version )
    PHP version 8.2.17

    I'm reasonably competent at following instructions and would be super grateful if anyone could help me fix this issue. MTIA!

  • Delete the directory of the theme via FTP. Make sure that you still have a second theme in /wp-content/themes/, as WordPress will then immediately use this as the new theme. You should then be able to access your WordPress again.

    Since the cause of the error is the theme you have been using so far, you would have to contact its developer for clarification. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find anything about this during my research. My suspicion is that the theme no longer exists and you would therefore have to find a completely new one.

    You can access the themes directory from cPanel using File Manager. Go to public_html/wp-content/themes/, rename the theme directory, and add _deactivate to temporarily deactivate the headway theme and you will be able to access the WP Dashboard.

    Ensure all required plugins by the theme are activated and upload the latest version of the theme. Reach out to theme support if the issue persists.

    Many thanks for these replies!

    I can now get into cPanel and also, my WP Admin page (albeit only in recovery mode).
    I’ve now established it’s an error with the WP theme I used which is now obsolete (i.e. no support available for this theme anymore). I think I’ll need to disable the theme, start using a new one and rebuild the site, which is going to take time.
    For now, I’ve had to use some ‘bush mechanics’ (as we say Down Under) and apply a redirect on the site. Hey ho!
