Default down arrown in header child links – missing

There are a lot of good things to say about the themes provided by SiteOrigin and even with only using a default install, I give them very high marks. There is something missing though that I have not seen before.
Having tried North, Vantage and Corp themes, I find none of them provide the default down arrow provided by WordPress in site navigation – page link -> child links. If one does a mouseover on the site navigation -> page link, then the child links will appear; similar to the SiteOrigin website.
The functionality of the down arrow is to show people there are child links and I would like to be able to show down arrows. Am I missing some setting to enable them or is this a design choice? I know I can get a plugin to provide but prefer not to.
