Insert code for google webmaster.

  • Hi there,

    I have a code from Google Webmaster which will verify my site with them. I just don’t know how to find the place to insert it.

    Google’s instructions are: copy the meta tag below, and paste it into your site’s home page. It should go in the section, before the first section.

    It’s to go below the ‘heading’ but above the ‘title’. I have gone through most of my dashboard, and can’t find the obvious place to put it.

    Any help would be much appreciated. I’m using Twenty-ten, if that is relevant.

    Edit header.php and add the meta tag provided by Google on a new line anywhere after the <head> tag and before the </head> tag.

    What is better is to use the Option to download a file and place it on the website.

    Thank you for your replies. Sorry to respond so much later. I did tick the box which asks if you want to be notified by email when a response comes in, but no notification came.

    My problem is I don’t know where to place the file. I followed the advice of ‘webjunk’ and added the code to the html section of a ‘page’. It then appeared on my site on the front page as if I had just posted it there. Is this what was supposed to happen?

    I’ve taken it down now in case it was not the correct way to do things.

    To t-p, I don’t seem to be able to edit the header. All that comes up when I click on ‘header’ is the option to change the ‘image’.

    Right, I did find the edit header.php and put it straight under <head>. However, google said they couldn’t find it. So I tried again putting it under ‘meta charset’ and before the ‘title’. that didn’t work either.

    Were you aware that you have to add the meta tag while you are still logged into your Google Webmaster account and part-way through the verification process? From what I recall, if you drop out of the process to add the code to your header and then try to verify it later, it won’t work.

    The file process you download the file and place it UNALTERED in the root of the domain you are verifying. Do not change the name or content. Then verify and you are done.
