ftp setup error

    I have been having this issue with ftp and wordpress for the last few days and finally decided to see if anyone could help me…

    I have just setup wordpress and have it hosted on one of my local servers. I also setup an ftp server on this same machine. After I log in to the wp-admin page I try to download new theme, or install new plugins. Lets take the themes example… After selecting a theme and clicking install it prompts me for my ftp information. After entering my info I click perceed and nothing happens. The status bar at the bottom of my web browser says DONE but nothing happens. Now I realize that I can install themes manually but I would like to get this working.

    I am pretty sure that my ftp is setup right. I can type the ftp host name into firefox and the type in my user and pasword and it will show me my files. By files i mean everyithing in my /var/www/localhost/htdocs/worpress/ folder were all the wordpress files are kept. This user who I log in with also has full permision to these files.

    is there a log for wordpress were I can figure out what wordpress is doing or does anyone have any other ideas.

    Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    ok so I am slightly more confused then when I started and hopefully some one can clear this up for me. I have been reading a lot of articles describing how to install wordpress, and I haven’t come across one that talks about setting up ftp. Although, now that I have wordpress installed it asks me when installing something(new themes or plugins) to provide and ftp host and user/password.

    So in order to get the fully functionality out of this I would need to also setup an ftp server on the hosting machine… Right??

    Yes correct. Most hosts will have FTP as standard as part of a hosting package and WP can use that (if you provide the user/pass) to install themes and plugins automatically. It is basically just doing the FTP job that you would do yourself.

    As you are self-hosting you would need to set up an ftp server of your hosting machine.

    I have made some progress since my last post but still am having a few problems. So here is were I am at.
    I setup vsftp on the host to provide ftp. I have got that working kind of by checking two things. First I go to Firefox and type in ftp://host-of-ftp and it will show my ftp files after I enter a username and pasword. I was also typing to confirm this with something else, so I tried fireFTP and that can connect to my ftp as well. So then I tried it in my wordpress admin interface. I went though all the normal option but every time I hit proceed after wordpress prompts me for my ftp info it does nothing. I don’t get any error messages. It just gives me a blank screen with all my menus still on the left. Do I need to turn something on so that wordpress will display error messages?? It would at least be nice if wordpress would give me some kind of message to let me know what it is doing.
    Is there a debug mode? Any other ideas?

    I don’t know if this is helpful but also on ftp connection page, the one that you put in ftp information, I only have a radial button for FTP. There isn’t one for FTPS (SSL) like I have seen on other screen-shots. Is this a problem?

    ok so I was going to user this link to try and setup ftp again:

    but I don’t have that ftps ssl radio button. Anyone know how to get that back??
