I help maintain a WordPress based site, and recently it has come up against a critical error and just gives us a white screen for both the site and for logging in. It says it has sent the site administrator an email on how to recover the site, but the original site administrator no longer works for us, and thus the email address will be not valid … is there a way that the ownership/admin email can be changed when you can’t even log in? I guess not – and so is there a way that WordPress Support can change the details on our behalf so that we can re-access the site and work out what has failed?

assuming your site is a self-hosted site powered by WordPress….you can change the users and site admin email addresses in the database connected to the website.

    • change a users email address in the “users” table
    • change the site admin email address in the “options” table

the database is often available in an area of your webhosting account labeled PHPMYADMIN (each webhosting account is organized differently so contact the support team for your webhosting account to request assistance to find the area with the database)

(volunteers on this forum do not have access to make changes in a site or in the webhosting account)
