Since yesterday I’m having a problem when I try to update or install/delete a plugin “automagically”.
When I enter my ftp credentials I keep getting “Failed to connect to ftp server”
When I try to connect through filezilla with the same credentials I can connect with no problem.
I have installed plugins and upgraded with the automatic system before when I tried to upgrade to 3.0.2 yesterday I noticed it not working anymore.

When I looked for my problem on the internet I came across a few solutions that mentioned changing the permissions (not save I know) but when I changed the permissions (recursive) on my wordpress map to 775 and even 777 the problem was still there.

I know I can do everything with filezilla but it would be nice to get the automagically-fuction working again as it were before.

    Any ideas?

I got the answer to this through the dutch forum section.

Just for future reference if somebody finds this one with the same problem.

I had to change a few permissions to get the backend editor to work properly and also to get w3 total cache to work. I was a bit lazy so instead of selecting the right files I changed the permissions to 777 for my whole public_html folder. Although I changed it afterwards knowing this was not a great idea security-wise.

But in doing this I did it recursive and chose to do this for files and folders. This made everyfile also 755 while it should be 644 for files and 755 for folders.

I changed this with filezilla (recursive and now choosing only files and only folders for the different permissions) and al my problems were gone.
