Help with changing permalinks and editing htaccess

I wanted to change the way blog posts show up on my site (https://verbal-0rchid.com/wp) – from the default numbered links to titles of the blog posts. (https://verbal-0rchid.com/wp/?p=123) to (https://verbal-0rchid.com/wp/2010/12/sample-post/)
when I click ‘save changes’ it says my .htaccess is not writable, but I can edit it manually. I can’t change the permissions on the file in my ftp, and I can’t find anywhere that tells me where exactly I should put the additional code.
Can anyone help me out with this please? Thanks so much!
