    Hello Modern Image Formats Team,

There appears to be a conflict with the BuddyPress plugin. When attempting to upload a profile photo, I get the error message: “There was a problem cropping your profile photo.” I’ve tried this several times via the WP backend and on the frontend, and it didn’t work.

Once I deactivated the Modern Image Formats plugin, it works fine.

    Best wishes.

Thanks for reaching out @bibblybob. From performing some tests I don’t encounter the same. To try and determine more on what may be happening in your case, please share the following:

    1. Does the same occur for all images uploaded via BuddyPress? Feel free to share a sample image whereby this does occur and I can test the same (in the event that the issue is related to some image properties).
    2. Did you test this on another other site? If not, please give this a try using a disposable WordPress site. Here’s a TasteWP link to generate a sample site with the Modern Image Formats plugin active.

Let me know if you have any questions with the above.

Hi @jamesosborne , thanks for the response. I’ve tried other images and both Chrome/Edge browsers, and I’m getting the same issue. So I don’t think it’s the image properties. It seems like it might be a conflict with another plugin. I’ve taken a screenshot of the error messages. Please see https://imgur.com/a/UeSrypK.

    Kind regards.

Thanks for checking. In the event you are impacted by a multi plugin conflict, please follow the steps below:

    1. Login to your live site from a Chrome browser incognito window.
    2. Install and activate the Health Check & Troubleshooting plugin.
    3. Navigate to “Plugins > Health Check & Troubleshooting > Troubleshoot”.
    4. From the same screen click on the “Available Plugins” tab at the top right and then click on the “Enable” option next to “BuddyPress” and “Modern Image Formats“.
    5. Attempt to update your profile photo once more.

If the same occurs, please share your Site Health information and we can investigate this further.

Thanks for sharing the additional information @bibblybob. I’ve been performing some checks and in my case, with the same plugins active (ListSpeed Cache, Autoptimize and Performance Lab related plugins) I don’t encounter the same. This is with all default configurations.

I also performed some tests on your own site and I can upload images successfully, although not consistently. I have been able to upload JEPEG, PNG and WebP images, which are resulting in AVIF output as a profile image. In the cases whereby I do encounter the same “There was a problem cropping your profile photo“, these seem to be for larger file images, although it may require some further testing. If you wish to disable the Modern Image Formats plugin once more, I can run some further tests on your site. Thank you.

Hi @jamesosborne , thanks for checking and for willing to do some further checks. I’ve deactivated the Modern Image Formats plugin on my site. Please let me know if you need me to do anything else.

    Best wishes.

Thanks for your patience on this @bibblybob. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to determine any cause for images not uploading for you when using the plugin. I tested this one a TasteWP site with BuddyPress active, along with the same plugins. As with my other test site, I don’t encounter the same, leading me to believe this is a multi party conflict, possibly with a caching or optimization feature of your site via one of your other plugins. There are a couple of checks we can perform to test this further.

    1. Can you confirm whether you did perform some checks with the Health Check & Troubleshooting plugin as suggested above, with only Site Kit and BuddyPress active? I ask as I don’t see any inactive core themes installed on your site. Ideally a core theme would be installed (but not active). When troubleshooting mode is active, it will switch to a core theme, which will be useful to check whether the same occurs from your site.
    2. Have you tried temporarily uninstalling any caching or optimization feature at host level, while also temporarily deactivating any plugins with caching/optimization features?

Let me know if you have any questions with the above. Thank you.

    Hi @jamesosborne ,

    Thanks for the response.

    • I’m pretty sure the issue is with the Modern Image Formats plugin because I’ve tried to upload a profile photo when the plugin is active, and it doesn’t work. But when I disable the Modern Image Formats plugin, I’m able to upload the profile photo. This is when all my caching plugins are active.
    • The caching plugins I have on my site are Autoptimize and WP Super Cache. With the Modern Image Formats plugin activated, I’ve deactivated each caching plugin at a time and then deactivated both of them, and I wasn’t able to upload the profile photo. It’s when I deactivate the Modern Image Formats plugin that the issue is resolved.
    • Can you confirm whether you did perform some checks with the?Health Check & Troubleshooting plugin?as suggested above, with only Site Kit and BuddyPress active?” For “Site Kit”, do you mean “Modern Image Formats”? In troubleshooting mode, when I enable BuddyPress only, I’m able to upload the profile pic. However in troubleshooting mode, when I enable BuddyPress and Modern Image Formats, uploading a profile photo doesn’t work. (I’ve tried this with several images)
    • As for the theme, I’m currently using a premium theme. As I use a child theme, I only have that and the main theme installed. I installed Twenty Twenty-Four to do some testing. As before, In troubleshooting mode, I could upload a profile pic when only BuddyPress is enabled, but when I enable both BuddyPress and Modern Image Formats, then I’m unable to upload the profile pic. (I tested this with several images).

    Thanks again for the help.
