can I customize the next/prev arrows in lightbox

    it is just an aesthetic thing – the existing arrows attract too much attention and distract from the images

    I would like to replace them with something like the filled triangles on this page (or more subtle)

    Are the existing arrows templated SVG or giff – or described in code?

    The arrows are SVG, which is written in the code. To change them, you need to change the plugin. Simply put, it is not customizable. You can only change the color, transparency.
