• Hi, I’m new to this and have searched the forums, but I’m still not clear. Is there a way to view my self-hosted blog before I import my wordpress.com data and pointing my domain at my self hosted site?

    Specifically, I have
    1) purchased a hosting account (bluehost)
    2) installed wordpress v 3.1.1 via simple scripts.

I can’t log into it, I assume, because my domain still points to wordpress.com. But I’m interested in installing a new theme, tinkering, and THEN migrating the wordpress data over (which I can’t do because I can’t log in). Then, if those changes look okay, I want to point the domain to my hosted wp.org site so that the changes will be glitch-free. Can this be done?

I’m trying to avoid making changes that are live until I’m sure they look okay.

    Thanks for your help.

    PK

  • What’s your website url?
if you’ve already pointed your domain to your self hosted wordpress, just get on another computer that hasn’t visited your website lately and your website should look like the self hosted version.

Sorry, I guess I wasn’t clear. I’m wondering how I can tinker with my site without it being live. That way when I like it, I can transfer all the posts and comments over from wordpress.com and point the domain at my self-hosted site, the effect being unnoticeable by readers.

In other words, how can I use wordpress(software, not .com) to put together a prototype of my site without visitors to my blog going to the prototype while it’s in progress?

    I forgot: it’s https://www.mypatraining.com

You can head over to https://20x.cc/ and get a free hosting account where they give you a subdomain like you.20x.cc . They fully support wordpress 3.0.3 so you can tinker with it there, then when you are ready, you can transfer and do what you have to do.

If you need any help setting up, i can help

Your host should be able to give you a temporary access IP or URL so you can setup an installation, test it, get it working and then, when you’re ready, point DNS to your host.

That sounds like just the answer I was looking for. Thank you!
