put site into maintenance mode except to admin?

    WP 3.03 actually, but not in list.

    Is there a way to put my blog into maintenance mode,
    but have the admin area still be accessible to only the admin? (you know like to apply upgrades, make changes to templates, etc etc)

    I know about the .maintenance file inside the blog root, but doing that the admin can’t access the admin area. I’m just looking for a way so the blog is down to the public so I can make template changes, upgrades, and other routine maintenance tasks without users being on the site, you know what I mean? you’d think there’s got to be a way to do that…

    I mean, am I the only one who thinks its crazy that the .maintenance file is rather sillie to block access to the admin area also? putting a site or blog or forum or anything else into a ‘maintenance mode’ should be so admins can run maintenance on the site, isn’t that right? well if so, then why is the admin area blocked to the admin in maintenance mode?

    wish it didn’t have to be a set time, like unlimited time would be nice, but otherwise this will do, thanks ?? I’m still designing my template and I’m not ready for it to be public yet. but I can set it to 30, 60, 90 or 120 days, which is good enough for now, and its not like I have to give the user a set time when its done, so this’ll work

    Administrators can update the DB and my guess is the major use of .maintenance is to block updates to the DB so people can backup their databases.

    I would suggest you set up a mock up of your site on a personal system at home and do your development work there.
