help with creating custom page

I think I might be making this harder than it really is. I need a little help with creating a custom page for my site. I mainly don’t want the side bars on subsequent pages. I just want it them on my main page. I know it is possible, just can’t quite figure out how to write the code for it. HELP PLEASE!!!
