Yep. The only thing is that you won’t be able to set custom permalinks (Option > Permalinks) *unless* you pass them through /index.php. Not a major loss.

actually you don’t need mod_rewrite for custom permalinks, if your host has .htaccess then its possible to have custom permalinks…

He’ll still need mod_rewrite because what the .htaccess file does is turn on and call the rewrite engine.

But if you’re perfectly comfortable without having permalinks, then there’s no reason to need mod_rewrite. ??

errr my host https://www.godaddy.com DOES NOT have mod_rewrite and this is a fact… and my site https://www.arrogantly.com does have neat permalinks and so I say that its possible out of experience

GoDaddy does have mod_rewrite. This has been discussed before.

only their dedicated servers have mod_rewrite enabled… and I was told of this directly by their customer support so its directly from the horses mouth mind you.

Apparently you can request mod_rewrite activation directly from GoDaddy customer support. Either you had a miss-informed support rep, or we have a lot of forum members who are lying to us.

that would be odd, mod_rewrite on request, godaddy support opined that the reason for not enabling mod_rewrite on shared hosts was to avoid certain security issue…

I dont think forum members are lying, I think they are the ones who might have been misinformed for permalinks work even though mod_rewrite is not enabled

I suppose if this is a recent issue, then your topic in late March ’05 would have been the first discussing it. My apologies.

As a side note, disabling mod_rewrite to avoid security issues is laughable. One might as well just disable PHP.
