What should a standard htaccess file include

Hi

I have a multiple WP installs on a server under different aliases, does anyone know why some installs have a .htaccess file and others don’t? (my FTP Client is configured to display all hidden files).

I want to add a .htaccess file to the WP installs that don’t seem to have, what should I include?
