So why not just rename it and use it as a new theme?

Absolutely none.

Turning it into your own theme so that it can sit alongside the original Twenty Ten theme can be quite important. If you ever post about display problems, the chances are that you will be asked to switch back the the Twenty Ten theme as part of the troubleshooting process.

Also, if your custom theme is ever automatically deactivated, WP will try to activate Twenty Ten as the fallback. so it is quite important to keep an original copy of the theme in your themes folder.

I’d avoid that name as I’ve heard rumours there’s a Twenty Eleven theme in the pipeline. “Dark Matter” seems a good name to me. Suits the theme.
