Trying to install WordPress to root directory, totally failing!

    Okay, when I installed WordPress to a subfolder, I had NO issue. Now that I am trying to install it to the root directory, no success. I can log in to the dashboard, and that looks normal enough, but when I try to pull up the site, I get a long, ugly error message in the browser window, something like

    Fatal error: main() [function.require]: Failed opening required

    This happens whether I do the install with my webhost’s automated WordPress installer or when I do the install manually. Any ideas?
