    I hope I can be clear. I plan to use wordpress on a site I have owned for several years. It already has a database. I have 2 domain names one the site at the moment and plan to add a third. I am trying to figure out where to put wordpress so I can use one copy for all 3 domain names and have the domain names as distinct. For example, https://www.firstdomain.com, then https://www.seconddomain.com. I’m at phpwebhosting. I have always had a www folder in my database where I put all my web stuff. When I added a second domain name, the instructions were to make a new folder inside the www folder with the new domain’s name. This all works fine. There seem to be several ways to install wordpress. I am trying to figure out the best one for me. My first stumbling block is what are you calling the root directory? Do you mean the database or the www folder or something altogether different? Does wordpress need to be in the same folder as the domains, or in the same database, how many levels can it be removed from, well, from where I assume I’ll be storing media files and whatnot (inside the www folder, for example.) Let’s start with that. Sorry about the rambling.

  • It all depends on how your server is set up as they all have name for root like cpanel is public_html Go Daddy has html.

    When we say root is directory where all the files and folders are for your wordpress.
    Database is where all content and settings are saved.

    I appreciate your response, but my main question is not answered: where do I put wordpress so that it will act on or with the 2 domains in the www folder in the manner the hosting company suggested I set them up.

    You cannot run a single WP install on 3 separate domains. You must install it in one domain. You can then forward the other 2 domains to the first one but that’s a entirely different subject.

    You will have to use addon domain name from host panel.

    excellent. This is what I’m looking for.

    I have already used addon domain name in the c-panel to place the second domain inside the folder of the first. Where do I put wordpress to address them both?

    Now I will answer my own questions. I wanted 2 wordpress sites that were not associated to each other in one webhosting location. I needed 2 installations of wordpress-one for each site-and not the networking thingie.
    Where should I install WordPress with my particular host. I have a linguistic quibble with you guys here. You use the term ‘root’-which has a specific meaning-as the description of where to install WordPress. For my particular webhost, I didn’t even install WordPress in the top level of the database. I installed in into the folders where the webhost was going to look for the website. In my instance, the top folder is called ‘www’ and the folder for the 2nd site is inside that first folder and has the domain name as its name. So I actually have one of my versions of WordPress down 3 levels in the database. That’s what worked.
