[Plugin: BuddyPress Private Community] Preventing folder overwriting on upgrade

Hello,

I was just wondering if anyone could help me replicate the feature where this plugin does not overwrite the entire contents of the plugin folder upon automatic upgrade that is mentioned here:

I am just trying to modify a plugin so that it does not remove custom folders added to the plugin folder when upgrading the plugin automatically and this seems like a good approach.
