Changing the URL to a purchased domain name

  • I purchased a domain name through Yahoo and would like to change my WordPress blog URL to the new Yahoo domain name. I am new to this process and have been looking for help on this and can’t seem to find instructions on how to do this. I looked through these forums and the posts I found were 3-4 years old on the topic so I figure things have probably changed since then. Thanks for your help!

  • Are you in the right forum? it sounds like you are talking about a wordpress.com blog, this is for self-hosted wordpress sites.

    My site was set up with www.ads-software.com so I thought I was in the right place.

    What is your current URL? With www.ads-software.com, you install wordpress on your own hosting account, with your own domain name. So if you could clarify what you are trying to change it from, I can help you. If its a temporary domain with your hosting company (like an IP address), you would just need to go into settings in your dashboard and change the URL there. If your link is whatever you chose . wordpress . com, then thats not self-hosted.

    My current URL is:

    https://localhost:8888/Wordpress

    I don’t remember choosing the name when I installed the site. I’m just not sure where to go to change it!

    You’ve installed WordPress locally – not on a remote server.

    ok, that helps. So if you have the domain name set up with your host, you should just need to change it in SETTINGS -> GENERAL, then look for wordpress address, and site address and update them accordingly. if you have the files in a directory called WordPress, then make sure you either include that in the updated URL, or move the files into the main directory AFTER you change the settings.

    If my files are in a directory called “WordPress”, can I just change the name of the files to the new domain name or do they have to be moved?
