keep website nonviewable to public while designing

Hi
I’m in the process of putting my site together and writing intro text and pages. While I’m doing this I do not want the site visible to the public – how do I edit it so it’s non viewable to public but I can see how the updates I make look and then when it’s completed, I can then make it live.
