Tutorials?

Sorry for sounding thick but…

I’ve noticed that the info in the rotating display, featured stoories, editor’s picks & latest headlines are the same. That is to say that each element or widget is displaying the same info/pages/posts just in a different format in different parts of the homepage. Are there any tutorials that will explain how each widget works and how to control the content?
