I have searched all over the forum, codex and the Internet looking for some steadfast rules for adding custom background images to WP sites and have them show up nicely no matter what browser or monitor size one is using.

Can someone point me in the right direction – or provide some important rules that must be followed when formatting with CSS?

    Thank you!

  • I think you’re looking for the impossible. There’s no way of knowing how large the custom background will be and a 1000px background simply won’t fit into a 800px wide screen.

I understand what you are saying about the different screen sizes but is there a “best practices” rule that most designers follow? Is it to always allow padding or white space around the site?

Thanks for your attention to my question, esmi!

Not sure there is a rule, per se, but I’d argue that some white space around any text area is a must – especially if you are using patterned or complex graphical backgrounds. Another “trick” might be to centre all of your background images so that they still provide a reasonable display on smaller screen sizes.

Well, I’ve gotten it to look great on my computer as well as the clients. I guess it will just be trial and error for all. Happy WordPressing!
