Installation Hurdles

  • Hi There,

    We are trying to find out what are the typical hurdles to over come when installing WordPress for the everyday person.

    From a programmers perspective, it is relatively simple.

    1) Create database and assign a user to it.
    2) In terminal use wget to download WordPress to desired directory then unzip.
    3) Follow thru instructions in wp-admin setup.

    What are some ways for none technical users to install WordPress?

    What are the major hurdles or walls that prevent you from a successful WordPress installation?

    We want to gauge a general understanding of the installation process to create better guides for non technical users.

    I am a total newbie but am studying hard to learn all there is to know about blogging and making money doing it. I had a wordpress.com site I was playing around with, just learning but I decided to go for the www.ads-software.com site early on so I could really get stuck into my new business venture. I went through the www.ads-software.com page and firstly clicked on hosting my domain name with bluehost.com which said it was a one click process to set up my new www.ads-software.com site and that’s where I came unstuck…!!! I have paid for hosting with bluehost and then clicked on the wp icon from their cpanel which took me to simplescripts.com where I downloaded wordpress which is in my downloads folder on my mac desktop. Then it tells me to unzip this folder and that’s where I got up to before getting totally lost. Can you help me with the next steps? Pleeeease???? X

    Hi There,

    It seems like you have been blocked by the high hurdle of 1-click installation. Do not panic, we can get you thru this.

    First make sure there’s

    1) A MySQL database created with a user assigned to it. (Your host should be able to help you create one)

    2) Unzip WordPress and upload via ftp the files to your host under the site directory. Should be under public_html or www

    3) Follow setup instruction under https://www.yoursite.com/wp-admin

    This would install WordPress to your site’s root directory so your blog would be on https://www.yoursite.com

    Hi,
    Thanks for your help….I got great online live support from bluehost.com and just need to wait 24 hours for my domain name to point to my www.ads-software.com host and then I can finalise the last few steps. It’s really daunting when you’ve never done all this before and don’t understand all the terminology but thanks to all the wonderful support like yours online, I am learning rapidly….XMish
