wordpress inserting subddirectory name-how to delete?

Hello,

My first question on here so a) apologies if it’s a stupid one and b) really appreciate any help.

I’m completely new to WP and have gone through the installation and copied all the files onto my site.
The first time I did this the files were copied into a sub-directory, that already existed, within the root directory and it all worked fine.

However, I didn’t want this (an extra directory in the structure) so have deleted it all and started everything directly from root BUT wordpress now seems to be looking for this subdirectory?? The site still works but the opening page shows with no formatting and it’s trying to link to files with the extra directory name in its path. Can anyone tell me where I can change this?
