I am unable to drag any available widgets into the sidebar on the Widget page. Any pointers?

  • Do you have FireBug installed and enabled? FireBug and the WP backend do not get along well at all. The clash makes the widget page almost unusable.

    Does your theme support widgets?

The default theme Twenty Ten does support widgets. So, to rule out any theme-specific issue, momentarily switch to the default theme and see if you can drag any available widgets into the sidebar.

I do not have FireBug installed.

I am using StudioBlue 1.0 by Elegant WordPress Theme

    @ LeilaJo:
have you tried the troubleshooting step I suggested above?

I followed your suggestions switched to Twenty Ten and tried again – widgets still won’t drag.

Have you tried deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

You need to either restart your php, or restart your webserver… when that happens, it means that php is hung and/or throwing errors…

what type of server do you have, or better asked, do you have access to either one of the two above?

I deactivated the plugins – am now able to drag and drop widgets into sidebar. Thank you.

But the widgets are not showing on my site. Am I missing something obvious here?

FireBug is a Firefox extension, not a theme, and it produces much the symptoms you described. That you didn’t recognize it tells me that’s not it ??

Do your widgets have the words ‘add’ or ‘edit’ written in the left top corner?

@apljdi As you can tell, I am not the most tech-savvy user out there ??

The widgets do not have ‘add’ or ‘edit’ in the left top corner. Since deactivating the plug-ins (see @esmi comment), I have been able to drag them to the sidebar menu on the Widget page.

Now to figure out why they are not appearing on my site!

why don’t you check your error logs (php) or ask your host to check them for you.. the php error log will tell you everything you always wanted to know about what is going on with your wordpress blog…

@rsgrone Your suggestion may be too technical for me to follow by myself. Where do I locate the error logs?

The reason you could not drag and drop is that a plugin or combination of plugins was interfering with your javascript. Almost all the functions in the dashboard are controlled by java.

Add your plugins back one-by-one until your blog breaks. You will then have the culprit and can look for a different plugin to accomplish what you want to do.

as @rsgrone suggested, ask your hosting provider to check them for you

do you have access to your server? Ok, lets start out with the basics, who is hosting your wordpress blog? Do you have your own server, virtual private server, or access to something like C-Panel for your site?

If you do not have any of the above then, contact your hosts tech department, and ask them to check the error logs for you….
