WPBook, general comment

  • Thanks to all who have produced this plugin. I installed it two days ago and, based on what I have read, I was expecting to see my site https://cheshmandaz.org change its look, mixing with a FB design, maybe with that FB activity box at the head or so. To begin with, it was quite complicated to set it up. And you have to follow what works and what doesn’t and why and how to fix it. At the end, though, I understand, what you get is publishing your posts to FB. Even the migration of FB comments to WP and the other way around doesn’t work, at least I couldn’t figure out how. But this is something you get with a much simpler plugin like Facebook Comments. I admit I am tech ignorant plus two days of fight are probably not enough. But at some point you come to think “why bother?” Or am I missing something?

    Ultimately WPBook won’t be for everybody, but I think what it does is pretty compelling.

    Did you follow the instructions provided at WPBook.net and linked to from the plugin itself?

    What WPBook does:

    • Provide a view of your WordPress Blog as a Facebook application. For example, consider: https://apps.facebook.com/openparenthesis/ and compare that to https://www.openparenthesis.org/ – same content, but viewed inside a FB application
    • Unify comments made in the FB application view or the WordPress view – comments made by Facebook users inside Facebook are “real” WordPress comments – so comments made on either view appear on the other as well
    • Post excerpts of your blog posts to your personal wall, and/or the wall of a page, group, or application, including post thumbnails if they are present
    • Import comments made on Facebook walls (again, your own or that of a page/group) against those posted excerpts to WordPress as full comments
    • Provide a view of your WordPress blog as a “tab” for use on a fanpage, including links to either the FB app view or the external WordPress blog view

    Sorry you had trouble setting it up – we’ve revised the instructions a number of times but there are many variables in terms of how WordPress can be configured, how WPBook can be configured, and how Facebook can be configured – add up all those options and it can be very difficult to determine what went wrong in your setup.

    John, thanks a lot, this was really helpful. I guess much is due to me being a complete tech ignorant person. There is not much instruction for dummies out there for WP nor for WPBook. The blog as a FB App is very interesting (I gather only for FB users, rught?). Yes, I was also directed to my Blog’s FB App thr WPB https://apps.facebook.com/cheshmandaz/ but that’s something quite primitive yet compared to yours (just wondering: only FB users can view that?) Thanks a lot again.

    There is not much instruction for dummies out there for WP nor for WPBook.

    I know I’ve worked on the useability and ease to set up of WPBook multiple times. I’m totally open to suggestions. The idea was to provide lots of pictures and simple to follow instructions. Have you tried following each step with side by side tabs. Maybe more steps are needed? Please let me know if you have any ideas for either the front or back-end useability. Although I work on making it easy for all users it’s sometimes hard for me to wrap my head around writing instructions for the novice WordPress user. If you’d also be interested in helping to write any of the docs or blogging about WPBook and giving hits to users let me know.

    Yes, you must be logged into to see the app. This is because we use code specific to the logged in user. For example we say their name a few places. We’ve thrown around the idea of a public view page or option that allows you to make the app not require login but one major thing is time. I think ideally I’d like to do a landing page much like many corporate apps “Welcome to APP Name” show sample content but make them add it to continue. There are just other things to do first (like keeping the docs current)
