What are the like button settings for? Makes no difference on the site

  • What are the like button settings for?
    It seems like no matter what, when I make any changes what so ever, nothing is affected.

    Is it a like button for posts and pages outside of the box?

    If I set it to recommend, it cannot be found anywhere on the page.

    Is this a bug of sorts?
