• I’ve set up comments in my new WP blog by turning on these settings:

x “Comment author must fill out name and e-mail”

Yet someone today succeeded in leaving an anonymous comment with no name or url. Is there some other setting I need to change in order to get comments working the way I want?

  • What spam / anti-spam plugins do you have, if any ?

Do you know that your sidebar is at the bottom of the page? (Firefox, 800×600)

Are sure that it’s a comment? Or, could it be a trackback/pingback?

I don’t have any anti spam plug ins installed (not that I know of). My blog is new.

    Yes, it is a comment ( https://www.richardsilverstein.com/tikun_olam/2005/06/snowflakes-embr/#comments )

The comment wasn’t immediately published. It was held back till I approved it. But I don’t want anyone leaving a comment w/o IDing themselves by name & e mail. I want no anonymous comments as this was.

Or does the WP moderation system allow someone to leave an anonymous comment then leaving it up to the owner to decide whether to refuse the comment? If so, why have a setting that indicates the commenter should need to ID themselves?

It is possible the user entered his name as “Anonymous”. For this reason, “Anonymous” is in my moderation list. When you go to Manage/Comments, can you see an email address for this comment?

The name is listed as “anonymous” but there is no e mail listed. The only other data is the IP address.

Was there an email address listed in the comment notification email that was sent to you?

No, this is what the e mail said:
    Author : (IP: 216.115.232.51 , 216.115.232.51) E-mail :
    URI :
    Whois : https://ws.arin.net/cgi-bin/whois.pl?queryinput=216.115.232.51

Ok, I see what’s happening. You’re experiencing a bug which forces all comments to be entered as Anonymous because what should be the name/email/website area has been replaced by “Logged in as . Logout ??”. You won’t see it if you’re logged in, so visit your site with another browser and you should see it. Here are some detailed instructions for fixing it: https://www.tomrafteryit.net/logged-in-as-logout-and-anonymous-comments/

I’m new to Wp so I’m having a little trouble visualizing the problem as you describe & what to do about it.

Before I start I should say that I’ve left a comment today on my blog & all of my data appears in the proper ID boxes. But as you said all of the external commenter’s ID boxes are empty.

I used IE (instead of my normal Firefox) to access both the blog & admin panel. I don’t see anything like “logged in as . Logout.” I see “Logout Administrator” (if we’re both talking about the admin panel). I see the same thing when using FF.

When I view the user list as Tom Rafferty suggests I don’t see two users (which he says is the cause of the problem). I only see myself in line 1. THere is a line 2 with nothing filled in except a few numbers.

A note: when I click on Comments in order to leave a comment, I see the following error:

WordPress database error: [Table ‘richard2_wp.wp152_exhibit’ doesn’t exist]
    SELECT ID FROM wp152_exhibit WHERE post_ID = 770 and preview = 1 ORDER BY picorder;

I don’t know whether this has anything to do with my problem or not. The error is prob. due to the fact that Carthik has been helping me to convert my blog from typepad to WP and there are prob. some db conversion issues still to be ironed out.

Hm, in that case you might want to check with Carthik. With the current bug that you have, if you weren’t logged into WordPress, you would see “Logged in as . Logout ??” rather than “Logout Administrator”.

OK, I think I’ve figured it out with Macmanx & Tom Raftery’s help. While there is only one registered user I do notice that there is a 2nd line with no data filled in. But the 2nd line does have 278 posts listed. When I opened those posts I see there is no author.

Is there any easy way to disassociate those 278 posts with the unnamed user & instead associate them with user 1, that is me?

This all happened during a long, laborious post import process from tyepapd to WP & somehow those 278 posts must’ve been mislabeled or something.

i have a quite similar problem with my comments..even if i use the option “Administrator must approve the comment”, new comments still appear right and it doesn’t go to “Awaiting Moderation”..this wasn’t like this before..i noticed this after i installed the plugin “SpamKarma2”..can any please help me? Thanks in advance ??

jaypee – Spam Karma2 bypasses the admin options. More information from drDave himself:

Oic, so that’s the reason why..thanks for the info..i’ve deactivated SpamKarma for the meantime and check out a different spam plugin..any recommendations?
