How to Customise Site before changing nameservers

  • I have a site that I want to move onto WordPress so I have set up the url as an add-on with Hostgator and installed wordpress. However, i want to build the new site before taking down the old one so I want to get into the wp-admin pages. But I’m not sure of the url I need to use to get in.

    Sorry if an easy question but can’t find an answer and am a bit of a newbie ??

    That will take you to login then take you straight to your admin.

    If you have many many pages and your old site pages are stored in database. You can use a plugin such as Easy CSV Importer to generate all your posts in WordPress automatically.

    You could install WordPress in a sub-folder and then redirect it to the root domain using this method.

    Well the problem is that as soon as I type in the URL it takes me to the old site so unfortunately that doesn’t work, thanks for replying anyway.

    Sorry that reply was for WTG. not sure I am technical enough for that solution esmi, I think it is already in a sub-folder as an add-on domain. Think I will just have to build it live after I have changed the nameservers at this rate.

    Try this then, straight to a specific page…

    /wp-admin/edit.php

    Is your original site built using a CMS? Usually a CMS would cause such behaviour.

    esmi is correct, you should be able to visit WordPress as a stand alone site within its own sub-folder on your server.

    You need to use a temporary URL for the add-on domain. Youll need to set your wordpress install to use it. Itll probably be something like https://youripaddress/yourusername/subdirectoryfortheaddon

    Hostgator can probably give you the exact URL.

    Thanks jeezyo, tried a few combinations but no joy, so think the best thing like you say is to ask Hostgator for the url.
