Twenty Ten: what is the future of this theme

The theme will work for a good while, until a WP or PHP function is deprecated!

Using child themes it should be easy to transfer to Twenty Eleven theme!

So far the 2011 theme does nothing for me at all..
If wp isn’t planning on upgrading 2010 why is it still included in the 3.2 update?

I did ask earlier today for an official comment on the future of Twenty Ten but I haven’t heard back yet. Keep an eye on this thread a while longer…

And what if any changes did they make to TwentyTen for the 3.2 upgrade?
Is it identical to the twentyten in 3.1.4? Please ask them that as well

No changes were made to Twenty Ten for 3.2 as far as I know.

There were only few minor tweaks, that’s all.

I think Twenty Ten is much more capable being a universal micro framework than Twenty Eleven, which looks and feels more like a theme for blog.

And it would not be too difficult for the WP team bring new things (like HTML5, random header or Showcase page) to Twenty Ten and make everyone happy again ??

Not true. It was announced at the time that Twenty Ten first appeared, that the plan and intent were to provide a new default Theme every year. Thus, the timeframe for Twenty Ten as the default Theme has never been a secret.

Patches are always welcome.

By the way: “random header” is a core feature, not limited by Theme, as far as I know.

If that’s a future strategy of WP I do not think that it is a good one.

That will force developers to go offshore in terms of selecting starting theme or framework.

The proper strategy would be to have one flexible theme that would be updated each year with all the features, o perhaps a set of several themes that will suit different scenarios, like 2010 for CMS purposes and 2011 for blog development.

You’re misconstruing the primary purpose of the default Theme. It is intended to be usable, to be best practice, to highlight the best WordPress features, and to provide example code.

Although it can be used as a solid Template for Child Themes, the default Theme is not intended to be a long-term development base or “framework”.

You’re certainly welcome to do that; just ensure that you understand the consequences of that decision – namely, that you’ll have to change your development base yearly, or else, fork and maintain your chosen base Theme.

But nothing would go wrong if WP would change its plans giving a helping hand and putting more stability for semi-pro WP developers ??
