• Hello, I am trying to run the Auto Upgrade (3.2.1) install and I kept getting the message
“Are you sure you want to do this?” and a link that says “please try again”. When I clicked the link nothing happened. I tried this in Chrome, FF, Safari.

Now when I try to update, I get this message:

    Downloading update from https://www.ads-software.com/wordpress-3.2.1-partial-0.zip…
    Unpacking the update…
Warning: copy(D:/Sites/single57/loonkaw/webroot/blog/wp-admin/includes/update-core.php) [function.copy]: failed to open stream: Permission denied in D:\Sites\single57\loonkaw\webroot\blog\wp-admin\includes\class-wp-filesystem-direct.php on line 200
    Could not copy files.
    Installation Failed

I have no plugins active as I have done nothing to the blog yet. I just signed up and there was already an update so I was going to do it before I began developing my design. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Guys!!

  • What theme are you using?

The default twenty eleven. But I haven’t begun to do anything at all yet. I just uploaded the files to my ftp and began slicing my psd.

Thx for puting that in a code box. I just saw the code tag

I think this is a hosting issue. Have you tried contacting your hosts?

Yes, I checked the “write” box for my blog folder. I thought it might have been a hosting security issue and that was part of it. I got a different message before I changed the security setting.

Should I contact them again about this issue?

Host (brinkster) says they have never seen that code before :/ Anyone else have a solution? Theory?

It’s not the code they need to look at. It’s the file/folder permissions & ownerships on your site initially.

Right and they change the permissions to read and right on the folders. but I still don’t get the upgrade. I still receive that error code. From what I have search about this people have asked this question and never found a solution. If they did, they never posted it on here. ?? I don’t know what to do.

I’ve had problems with this issue when clients had shared hosting – so far only with Go Daddy. It would prevent them from updating and even installing larger sized plugins.

My client said the host gave a similar response – we’ve never heard of that before.

It’s probably an ownership issue as opposed to a permissions issue. PHP may be configured to to create folder and files with “nobody” as the owner – which means you can’t change or delete them. This is a server issue and sometimes, when you contact support, it depends on whether you hit lucky and get someone who understands this.

lol, thats what I figured. Thanks guys. I’m going to try to contact my host again and ask them about the php folder configs.

EDIT: note there is no shared hosting in this situation.

Very excellent point esmi – I have run into permission problems before that are similar to this.

I would recommend calling the hosting service and bringing up this topic – asking them that you believe it might have something to do with permissions.

if not shared hosting then it shouldn’t be a connection problem.

Unbelievable. I’m honestly thinking of changing hosts. These monkeys are no help. Basically he said he reset and changed all of the permissions and ownership. He doesn’t know what to tell me. He asked me if it was important to upgrade. I said well yes I’m going to have to update at some point and I had rather fix the problem now instead of when I have a full site or more up and can’t update. IDIOT. So he tells me the only thing he knows I can do is try to delete all the files and redownload or try manual update which I’m not sure I can do.

He asked me if it was important to upgrade.

Seriously?! Who are your hosts? How comfortable are you with using FTP? A manual upgrade isn’t that difficult if you can use ftp. Not ideal, I know but better than being stuck unable to upgrade.

Yeah, he asked me that. WTH! My host is brinkster. I was going to use a different host but my client was already using them and I told her to cancel because she would have to upgrade packages if she used them. She went to cancel so they upgraded for free. Now I’m thinking I might change hosts anyways. I’m comfortable with FTP. I use FileZila. Can I make those changes or check to see if things are set up correctly there?
