Backup Works but database .sql file is empty

  • I love your plug-in and have it on a number of sites. The backups work fine and all the files are there. But the WP database .sql file has zero size and is empty. I have checked all the settings I know to try. Any advice?

    Hi Jim,

    that’s not good… we wouldn’t want a backup plugin that doesn’t back up ??

    Did you receive any error messages, particularly when you generate a manual backup?

    Are you looking at the one in the wp-content/uploads folder? The .tar file saves the entire directory structure of your server so it’s hard to describe where exactly this location is. On my system for example, the full path is

    /var/www/vhosts/mydomain.com/httpdocs/wp-content/uploads/filename.sql

    but this is different depending on your Linux distribution. I’ve just checked mine and it’s there safe and sound, 4.1MB in size.

    Hi Jay,

    No error messages during the auto or manual backup.

    In the wp-content/uploads folder on the server I have the full 69MB .tar snapshot of the entire site. It also is placed in the server folder I tell it in your set up area. There is no .sql file in the wp-content/uploads server folder. I am running this on two sites and both do the same thing.

    In the .tar file itself, there is a .sql file in the wp-content/uploads folder but it is zero length and empty.

    I will do some more testing (maybe it is a plug-in conflict) and post back soon.

    Hi Again Jay,

    I tried it some more on even a third site (all these are with the same host on the same server). Same results. I disabled all other plugins and it is the latest 3.2.1 WP.

    I have another plugin I have used called WP-DBManager. It is able to backup and operate on the sql db so I do not think it is a settings or permission thing with my host or server.

    So I am stumped.

    I know that plugin, it’s very good indeed.

    The difference is that my plugin uses a Linux Shell Command to read out the database (mysqldump) whereas WP DB Manager uses a PHP script. I’m not that good with PHP so I went the other way, but it may mean that for whatever reason your host does not allow the execution of said command. It could be that the SQL file is not read out because of restrictions put in place by your host.

    I’ll see if I can read out the database some other way in a future update. Sorry it’s not working out for you right now.
