• Hi – I’m using the 2010 theme and the “Thumbnail For Excerpts” plugin. The plugin did a nice job of inserting thumbnails next to my excerpts. I spent some time creating square, well-framed graphics, but it was worth the effort.

Recently, with help from the admins on this forum, I learned how to use the Featured Image capability to specify a custom header graphic on a per-post basis. I like it. I might even actually use it, except for one issue. Without ever asking for my permission Featured Image hijacks my thumbnails and replaces them with its own monstrosities. Argh!

Is there an easy way to force Featured Image to limit its actions to the header image? Or perhaps another way to achieve the desired results?

    Thanks

  • Get rid of the plugin and then set your thumbnail image dimensions up correctly so that you can use the Featured image option properly.

There is a problem with this, esmi. Briefly, the aspect ratio of the header image (4.7 to 1) and the aspect ratio of a thumbnail (1:1) are radically different. This suggests that the two want to be 2 different images.

This is the type of image that would be appropriate for a header. This is an image that would be appropriate as a thumbnail. This, on the other hand, is the thumbnail 2010 Featured Image produces.

I can set 2010 thumbnail image dimensions “correctly” until the cows come home, but I will never end up with the thumbnail image that I deem is appropriate. It is an impossibility. For me, using it as you call “properly” is not satisfactory. Hence, my question about a workaround.

    Thanks

Create a child theme with an alternative featured image function – perhaps based on the first image uploaded to the post?

Featured Image will not allow you to generate more than one featured image per post.

Maybe a plugin like this would work?

Thank you. Unfortunately my skills have not reached this level. Perhaps in the future this will be possible.

Thank you six. I’m going to take a good look at this.
