My webhosting plan came with v. 2.3.1. I just got turned onto WordPress and have followed the instructions for upgrade to 3.2.1, but every time I login to my wpadmin, it still says I’m in 2.3.1 and I don’t see the features I would expect with the upgrade. I even deleted the whole program manually from my server and reinstalled, but the wpadmin still says 2.3.1.
I’m using Hostcolor and cpanel and have a pretty high experience level with computers – code my own website etc.
Any advice for the wp noob here would be greatly appreciated.

  • 2.3.1! Good grief! Your hosts need to offer a far more recent version of WordPress asap.

When you say you upgraded to 3.2.1, what exactly did you do? An upgrade of that size requires a series of smaller manual upgrades.

I followed the upgrade instructions that I found on the wp site. I thought it might need to go through multiple steps, but was unable to find any documentation of that process.
Would you recommend contacting the host? That’s what I was considering as my next step.
Thanks so much for the feedback.

I’d suggest that you scrap the current install and then install WordPress 3.2.1 manually. It really isn’t as daunting as it sounds.

I tried to do that after the first failed update. I deleted all the wp stuff and installed the 3.2.1. At that point, I had to go back into cpanel and create my blog again. When I did that, it still popped up as 2.3.1. I don’t understand why it did this because I deleted every single file in that folder and replaced it with the new files. The time stamp of last modification didn’t change when I created the new blog, but it still says 2.3.1. Is there anywhere else wp files could be hiding? Does that come from my host? If I didn’t create the blog through cpanel, I couldn’t log into wpadmin so I’m a little lost.

I am totally comfortable with all this – I just can’t tell if my host has caused the problem or if I’m missing some trick because I’m new to the software.

    Site url?

Your root domain (site) isn’t using WordPress
Your blog is using WordPress 2.3.1

Where did you install WP 3.2.1 on your domain? Did you use a fresh database?

    That’s not me ??

    it’s https://playmedusa.com/blog

Creating a new user won’t solve anything, either. I know it sounds like there’s a firewall somewhere, but I never installed one. I’ll check my router just in case something was activated somehow…

Lol, sorry, I totally confused two different threads. Sorry! You may delete my two messages ??

Try run the manual upgrade of your WordPress installation. Frankly, I was kinda shocked to hear that there are still people using WordPress version 2.3.1.

@arrentan:If you read the rest of the topic, you’ll see that:

    1. It’s not the OP’s fault. The hosts are the ones offering WP2.3.1 as a 1-click install. So until they update their act, don’t use Hostcolor as your WP hosts, folks,

    2. A manual install of 3.2.1 has already been done but the OP is still seeing the 2.3.1 version number. I’m currently trying to find out if they now have 2 installs on their server.

Hi wi wonder if you can help me too, i also tried to upgrade to latest version by clicking on the button on my admin page. i can now not get on the admin site, only onto the main site. i try to log in and recieve the following error

Fatal error: Call to undefined function wp_menu_unfold() in /home/sevenate/public_html/roughfellsheep.co.uk/wp-admin/admin-header.php on line 31

help i am only doing this as a favour and i feel i ahev not been passed on all the information such as host etc.

    Help

Thanks esmi. I just ran a search through my ftp for the term “wp” and I didn’t find anything for wordpress except in the database I created for this install and the install I recently attempted. I’m certain there is only one install.

When I did the fresh install and tried to access wpadmin through my browser, it didn’t work. I failed to save the error message and don’t recall it, but the page wouldn’t load at all until I went into cpanel and recreated the database (with the same name) at which point, I was back to my 2.3.1 load.

I followed very carefully the instructions for manual update after that. There was no easy/automatic update button on the interface – just the link to the wp update instructions. After I completed this operation, I still had the 2.3.1 page.

At this point I think perhaps my best course of action is to contact the host. Opinions?

Thank you for the idea. I was hopeful you were right about a double install. That would have been easy to fix lol

Re-install 2.3.1 and then carry out a series of smaller manual updates:
    2.3.1 -> 2.5 -> 2.7 -> 2.8 -> 2.9 -> 3.0

Then update to 3.2.1 using the 1-click upgrade option.

I am happy to report that Hostcolor is fixing everything for me. I couldn’t do normal update/install because of a server issue. In all fairness, I’ve been with them for several years so it’s not surprising that the server I’m on is probably the same version I’ve had since I started with their service which doesn’t have the right PHP and extension support. As soon as I started a support ticket with them, they offered to migrate my server to an upgraded one and upgrade wp for me for free with no delay in my normal service (which I took them up on as I’ve spent too many hours fooling with it at this point lol).

    Thanks again for the help!
