When I clicked on my site this morning a form came up for setting up a wordpress blog. I thought this was some kind of mistake so I went ahead and wrote in the name of my site and password which I had to repeat of course. Unthinkingly, I went ahead and logged in and then of course I got a brand new blog. But my original blog is gone to never-never land apparently.

I’m not sure that my blog version was 3.2, but several days ago, maybe it was a week, I upgraded my blog to the latest wordpress version.

Would this be related to the Zero-day bug? Any way I could recover my original blog??

  • It’s nothing to do with that bug (which was specific to the timthumb script used in some plugins & themes). It sounds far more likely that your hosts oopsed and managed to lose your database content – tables and all. Do you have a recent database backup?

Yes, I have a database backup as of last Saturday, the 30th. Do I need to use precautions now that I’ve made a new site? Or does it matter? I’ve never restored from a database before and am not too skilled.

if you’re happy to continue with your new site, then don’t worry about it. But if you want to recover content from the previous site, you’d need to restore the database, yes. There are detailed instructions on how to carry out a restore on this Codex page.

When I tried to log in to my host server through cPanel, I got the message, Malicious Web Site Blocked. This came from Norton. I’ve entered a support ticket with the host.

I have the same problem as mard. After upgrading to the latest wordpress my entire blog vanished. I can enter the proper address but when the computer finds the site there is nothing but an empty white screen. Is it totally gone or is there any way of retreiving it? Unfortunately I do not have a current backup.

It is a wordpress blog hosted through my website https://www.InternetMoneyInfo-noscams.com/wordpress

If I have to start new from scratch can I still use the same name and address?

    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

Here’s the response I got from the support ticket I entered:

    Hello,

It sounds like your wordpress has been exploited somehow. Were you using old version of wordpress? If you do have backup, just wipe out all your data using FTP and start to install wordpress from scratch. You can restore your data that you have right now to get all your old content. But, make sure you have changed all your passwords.

    Thanks

    @mard: site url?

I made a couple posts but they don’t get displayed, just a blank screen appears. I have not used my data backup file yet.

Could I give you log in information?

Can you get into your cPanel without any warnings coming up?

Mard, I’ll take any suggestion you have.

esmi, I don’t havbe cpanel. I can’t afford it. Any other suggestions?

@weberoe: It is considered impolite to interrupt another poster’s thread. Please post a new topic.

I am no esmi = but I recently, in redoing a bunch of my own blogs, evidently trashed one of them. I looked everywhere on the server and the files were simply gone. But when I went to my server admin area, clicked on my databases – I found the database still there. It’s a tricky thing to do, messing with the database on line. But I found the wp-posts table and was able to “edit” each line (each post has its own line). I could then copy and paste the content into a text file, just to make sure I didn’t lose any of the posts. This doesn’t really address your particular problems – only, it gave me great relief to find that the database was still there. Eventually I set up a new site and tied it to that database.

The one thing I will say is that regular backups can save a ton of heartache. Both of database and content. The “export” function under “tools” in your dashboard makes a lovely back up and is easily done.

@esmi Yes, now I can get into my cPanel without the big error message I received yesterday. What happened? Were you able to fix it?

Sorry, I don’t know how this system works. I won’t bother you again.

There is one more place you have to check. .htaccess file. it may seems ok but always try to scroll down to make sure there are no entries below the screen height.
