• OK…so, a quick search shows I’m not the first person to screw up moving their first WP site…doesn’t take the sting off the risk of having lost everything I did so far…

I was trying to put a new website together for my boss.

    I have a subdomain I was using as a sandbox… href=”https://newsite.innovativewings.com”

I read up on about a hundred different ways of moving a site to innovativewings.com

Then made a fantabulous mess of the change over. The wordpress site is now somewhere in limbo and I’m not really sure how the hell I got it there… I tried using export/import from within wordpress (changing the site URI’s first.

Now I have a homepage at the subdomain (great), but everything else front end or back gives me a 404!

I wish I could tell you more, but this is just a general help! I’d be gutted if I couldn’t get the site back running in the subdomain… then once that mess is sorted I can think about putting it at innovativewings.com

Oh, and a general HI! to the community..I am sadly one of ‘those people’ who joint a forum out of desperate necessity!

Thanks for any help, and if there’s anything I haven’t been clear on, please let me know!

  • Did you backup the database before you began the move? Have you reviewed Moving_WordPress?

    Hey esmi,

Yea, I was following the Moving page when I did it. I do have the database I believe…I downloaded it from phpmyadmin? It’s a .sql file?

*Sorry…I was following the Moving page when I cocked everything up! ??

The .sql is a database backup file, yes. I think the best thing you can do now is to restore that backup into your database and put any moved files back to their original location. Once the site is running correctly at its original location, start the move process again but, this time, follow the relevant instructions slowly and very carefully.

    Awesome, thanks esmi,

I replaced the database (got the one error)

    Error
    SQL query:

    — Dumping data for table wp_comments

    INSERT INTO wp_comments ( comment_ID , comment_post_ID , comment_author , comment_author_email , comment_author_url , comment_author_IP , comment_date , comment_date_gmt , comment_content , comment_karma , comment_approved , comment_agent , comment_type , comment_parent , user_id )
    VALUES ( 1, 1, ‘Mr WordPress’, ”, ‘https://www.ads-software.com/’, ”, ‘2011-08-26 14:11:24’, ‘2011-08-26 14:11:24’, ‘Hi, this is a comment.To delete a comment, just log in and view the post’s comments. There you will have the option to edit or delete them.’, 0, ‘post-trashed’, ”, ”, 0, 0 ) ;

    MySQL said:

    #1062 – Duplicate entry ‘1’ for key 1

But got back onto the admin and changed the site locations.

I will have a look through to see if everything is now in order and start again if all is well with site. ??

OK, after calmly going through the procedure, the site seems to be up and running.

I was left with one problem from the move however…

So, when I add a new image, it uploads then crunches…success!
BUT, the image it shows in the list is a dead link.

I’m not really sure if that explains enough, but as always, any help greatly appreciated!

    ??

Check your uploads path in Settings -> Media. In most installs, it should be blanks.

Thank you once again esmi, you are my hero. It was pointing at the old subdomain…duh!

    It happens sometimes. ??
