• Hi there,

    I just started a new job today, and among my duties is the maintenance and updating of the Coalblog (https://www.coal.ca/blog/index.php).

    The blog is currently running with WordPress 1.2, and I would like to upgrade it to 1.5 but am concerned that the custom template will be affected by the upgrade.

    Can anyone tell me whether my concerns are justified, and if so what I can do to ensure that the template remains intact and I don’t accidentally bring the blog down on my first day as communications coordinator here?

    Thanks so much,
    Heather

    That should help, but ask whatever you need to before if you are concerned.

    backups are good, very very good.

    Thanks. I’ve made it through the first steps, but when I get to the “Prepare Your Files” part I run into a problem.

    I am told to replace the line:

    <?php include(ABSPATH . 'wp-comments.php'); ?>

    with

    <?php comments_template(); ?>

    The problem is, my wp-comments.php doesn’t have the <?php include(ABSPATH . 'wp-comments.php'); ?>. I can send or post a copy of the file if that would help.

    Thanks,
    Heather

    It should be in the index.php.

    Thanks. I got the whole thing upgraded nicely.

    The only problem is that for some reason the header image now has a white margin next to it on the left (check https://www.coal.ca/blog/ to see what I mean). The stylesheet is exactly the same, I can’t figure out what’s happened.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,
    Heather

    I see the white space on the right (FF 1.0.4) and it seems you have in the stylesheet an
    #outerwrapper {
    width: 820px;...

    and a header pic = 795px.
    The difference is white ??

    Thanks. I seem to have made it do what I need. Now I’m trying to figure out why the comments form doesn’t appear. The site had over 6000 spam messages awaiting moderation when I inherited it, so clearly my predecessor shut them off, I can’t figure out how, though. They’re turned on in the options and on the individual entries.

    Nobody mentioned “blog detective” as a role during my job interview. ??

    Fantastic! I would like to thank all the people who worked on the upgrade manual, it worked like a charm.
    Up and running in 1,5 hours, thanks very much!
