WordPress displaying RSS feed instead of website

Looks like it’s still doing it, and I’m coming prepared with a screenshot. Seriously, any help would be great. :<

When it happens in Firefox, the style for the RSS is intact and looks like an actual listing. Point is, it shouldn’t be doing this at all.

I was able to get it to only show up on Chrome this time–and only on the page I took a screenshot of. It was consistent (it loaded that way every time the link was clicked).

Please help!

I can’t see any RSS feed on that page. What I do see is a flash of unstyled content.

I don’t think we even have an RSS feed, or that we even want to use it. I’ve tried removing the RSS bits in the header and it still doesn’t fix it.

Any idea why it may be getting that flash? (and why my screenshot is happening)

You will. WordPress generates the feed automatically and populates it with your post content. As I said above, what I saw is not RSS, it’s unstyled page markup. Once the CSS & images kick in, the page then displays correctly. You might want to look at how many external scripts you are loading. The more you load, the longer it will take the full page to load and be rendered – including the CSS.

Your screenshot, on the other hand, is the contents of an RSS feed. Can you give me an example link to a page that demonstrates this problem?

And of course, now the page that was (not) working for me today, is now working. That’s the thing about this–it’s hard to recreate because it can happen to any page at any time.

That’s the one that was (not) working earlier today, but now it’s loading fine. It was only loading incorrectly on Chrome, but again, it seems to be fine now. D: I feel like it just depends on what computer you’re on, which browser you’re using, and how the planets are aligned at that particular moment in order for it to happen. Haha.

If it’s intermittent, that backs up my initial gut instinct that this is a server problem. Perhaps it only happens when the server is heavily loaded? Have you spoken to your hosts about it?

We do host a very high traffic site along side this one, so if it’s your gut reaction, I will go ahead and check in on that and get back to you. Thanks so much!

Hey there! I’m involved with the site as well.

Just for clarification we run two WordPress sites on the same server, and for some reason it’s the smaller, lower traffic site that is having the problem. However I’m not ruling out something being up with the server.

Also it should be noted that when the bug occurs in Firefox, the page displayed is the RSS page, but when it happens in Chrome it is some sort of unformatted XML page.

Any help would be appreciated!

The Firefox/Chrome difference is perfectly understandable. Chrome does not have an inbuilt RSS reader (which Firefox does) so cannot handle/format the RSS feed file.

If this is one of 2 sites on the same server, then you could try:

– deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

– switching to the Twenty Eleven theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

– resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

– resetting your custom permalinks back to the default setting via Settings -> Permalinks. If this works, then review Using_Permalinks before setting a custom permalink structure back up again.

I think our biggest problem is testing, as this bug is very hard to replicate. I don’t know what the odds are of seeing it but I feel like it’s almost 1 out of every 100 page views? I swore it was fixed yesterday when I disabled an older plugin but it’s still going on. :/

Well I found a few more unused plugin files that had yet to be deleted so I removed everything that currently isn’t being used and used your method for resetting the plugins folder… so we’ll see if that works! I wish I had time to hit F5 for an hour but I’ll have to wait and see if it pops up again. :/
