• Just d/l 3.2.1 and instant problems.
Can’t find programme on my laptop to open .php so had to try the ‘open wp-config-sample option. Opened it in wordpad, but don’t understand a word it says!!
What is my database name? What is MYSQL and should I have such a thing on my computer??
And when I have worked this all out, I am invited to “just copy this file
    * to “wp-config.php” and fill in the values.” Well, how do I copy this file to wp-config.php when i don’t have .php on my laptop?
So much for the ‘famous 5 minute installation’ LOL! The instructions are in a different language and I have been internetting since 1995!!!

  • You need to install WordPress on a web server.

A web server? Ok, obvious to you, but where is a web server? It just said download to to my computer in the famous 5 minute installation, it didn’t mention a web server.

Try re-reading Installing_WordPress – especially the sections entitled “Things to Know Before Installing WordPress” and “Things You Need to Do to Install WordPress”. In short, unless you intend to set up & run your own web server, you need to buy some hosting and register a domain name first.

Oh, I have just bought hosting with HostGator. Is that a server? It says it’s a host. Very confused with all the new language. To be honest, I read the Installing WP instructions, but couldn’t make head nor tail of all the terms used. Baffling if you don’t speak the language.

Steps 2 and 5 both mention a web server.

A host (like hostgator), is a company which runs lots of web servers.

What is my database name? What is MYSQL and should I have such a thing on my computer??

The database name will be given to you by hostgator. In the hostgator control panel, there should be options to create a database.

MySQL is a database program. You don’t need to have it on your computer. Hostgator will have it on their servers.

Well, how do I copy this file to wp-config.php when i don’t have .php on my laptop?

PHP files are just plain text files. You can open and edit them with notepad. However, you need PHP to actually run the code and translate it into HTML code for your web browser. Once again, you don’t need PHP on your laptop, hostgator will be running it on their servers.

So much for the ‘famous 5 minute installation’ LOL! The instructions are in a different language and I have been internetting since 1995!!!

It’s less than 5 minutes if you already have hosting space with all the requirements, and know what you’re doing. Managing your own website requires a lot more skills than simply using the internet, but it can be learnt.

What you need to do now is to upload the files onto hostgator, then visit the install.php file in your web browser. That’ll be at https://domainname.com/wp-admin/install.php

Feel free to ask again if you get stuck.

Or use fantastico install program at hostgator if you find it difficult to follow 5 mins instructions as it will all done for you in 3 mins.
