Hijacking post admin "show all dates" filter

Is there a way I can change the criteria the “Show all dates” filter uses on a post admin page?

I’ve got an “events” custom post type, and it’s been brought to my attention that filtering by date on the Events admin page really should work based on the event date, and not the date on which it was posted.

I’ve searched around for a way to do this, but of course “filter” is a loaded word when searching WordPress topics.
