Include the column 'Order Number' at 'Dashboard => All Pages'

  • The title is self-explanatory : I am suggesting the inclusion of the column ‘Order Number’ at ‘Dashboard => All Pages’.

    It will :
    -> provide an useful global information about the order of each page, that only makes sense when related to the order of the other pages
    -> allow an easy and intuitive sort of the displayed Pages based on the order of each one.

    That’s it.

  • Why? The Page Order is represented by the very order in which the Pages are shown on that list.

    Hi esmi. Thank you for the information. I didn’t know that. This shortens the usefulness of my suggestion, but I keep it, for the following reasons :

    * To give a ‘Page Order’ number to a page, you need to know the ‘Page Order’ number of the other pages. So, this information should be easily viewable. Now, to get it, you need to go inside the edition of other pages and to write it in a peace of paper before you can choose a proper number to give to your new page.
    * You can change the order in which the Pages are displayed by clicking the title of any column. But if you want to return the order to the ‘Page Order’ number, now you have first to know what you taught me, then you have to make a strange leave of the ‘All Pages’ panel and them return to it. With the ‘Page Order’ column, this will only need a simple click on its title.
    * Many other users probably don’t know that the ‘Page Order’ is the default sorting criteria. With the ‘Page Order’ column, it will become pretty visible.

    As my suggestion is certainly very easy to implement, the benefit/cost relation justifies it.

    Use Quick Edit ?? You can both see the pages as they’re ordered AND their page order number.

    It is a good suggestion. The reason is that I usually skip several numbers when creating pages to allow room for adding pages in between at a later date so I don’t have to reorder all of the pages.

    For instance, I may set up a website with page numbers such as 1, 4, 7, 10. This will allow me to later add a page with the number 2.

    If the pages were numbered 1, 2, 3, 4 and I wanted to add a page in between 1 & 2, I would have to renumber 2, 3 & 4.

    Being able to see the page numbers on the page showing the list of all pages would save me a lot of time.

    I just found this plug-in which might solve my problem, as it appears that it allows reordering of pages just by dragging and dropping. However, it seems a bit problematic. If this does what I think it does, it should be incorporated into WordPress.
