RSS Error: WP HTTP Error: name lookup timed outI and other connection problems

    I am having some issues with my WordPress sites not connecting to outside services. I noticed the problem when akismet stopped working and I started receiving this message on the dashboard :
    RSS Error: WP HTTP Error: name lookup timed out

    Nothing has changed on the server or the sites but it is affecting all of my WordPress sites on the server.

    Also the admin panel is extremely laggy, while the actual site itself runs just fine.

    WordPress is up to date and i am unable to re-download using the built in updater.

    The issue persists with all plugins disabled.

    I have also re-uploaded WordPress core files to no avail.

    The host has told me there is nothing causing an issue on the server, but i feel that there may be since it has affected all of my sites.

    I am hosted on a vps.

    Any suggestions?

    Just an updated:

    I am still unsure what caused the problem but it is now resolved. After dealing with tech support with my host I was ready to give up and move my sites to another host.

    As a last ditch effort I ssh’d into the account and restarted apache and mysql. Low and behold all of my issues were resolved.

    I am leery of calling this resolved, as I do not know the root cause, but everything is now functioning as normal.

    Your issue is the same as mine. Suddenly the HTTP errors are popping up and WordPress has become unusable.

    I have tried extending the timeout for requests in order to see if pages will process. I’ve tried everything from plugins to disable certain HTTP requests and I’ve also rebooted my VPS, Apache and MySQL (those two after reading your post) but nothing has helped as of yet.

    I’ve disabled every plugin installed and yet WordPress moves along at a snail pace before eventually grinding to a stop so I can only think this is related to WordPress itself and possibly not our servers.

    I’ve contacted my host as this problem didn’t exist when I used my website last week during my last proper use and I’m glad that I’m not the only one who is suddenly experiencing this problem.

    Please update if you have any problems or solutions that may help myself or others get around this problem.

    It sounds like you tried everything I tried.

    I honestly have no clue what the problem was, and the server logs were no help whatsoever. I have contacted my host to see if they made any changes during the process that may have taken affect when restarting apache and will post back here once they respond.

    The strange thing is, the server could connect to akismet, wordpress and others via ssh. It seemed to be directly related to wordpress. And nothing was changed.

    I am having the same issue. Have you resolved your problem? how did you do it?
