• I have a bit of a dilemma. I’ve been running my website Chick Lit Reviews since 2009 – tons of posts, loads of book cover pictures, etc – but unfortunately I now have to move to a new domain name. The hosting will stay the same and I’m just wondering if someone can explain to me, in laymans terms, the easiest way to move WordPress to my new domain name without losing it all and re-installing it. I’ve read the WordPress page for it, but truly, it makes no sense. I can’t wrap my head around it and I’m hoping one of you guys can take pity and explain it to me in simple terms.

But to make the new domain name work I need to make it the primary domain on my hosting account, thus deleting the current one, so can I do it? Can I change all the required info before making the new domain the primary one and save myself from having to basically start over?

My hosting people, HostGator, said all I need to do is change the site’s name and URL in the dashboard, but that’s not true, is it?

(I never knew moving domain names and trying to keep the site in tact was so difficult. Someone really needs to fix that…)

  • If you want to change the site from one domain to another, you’ll need to change all instances of the old domain name to the new one in your database.

Another way, which might be easier, is to export all of your blog content, install wordPress and your theme on your server at the new domain name and then import your content. That way you wouldn’t have to fiddle with the db at all.
