The provided search bar on my site is grey and ugly and floats over the header when the window is condensed. I want to delete it and replace it with a widget search bar in my sidebar.

I’ve got the widget set up already. I just need to remove this provided floaty grey search bar.

So far the only help I can find is to deactivate the search function entirely by deleting the code in the Search Form. I don’t want to do that, of course.

    Can anyone help?

Do not edit the Twenty Eleven theme. It is the default WordPress 3.2 theme and having access to an unedited version of the theme is vital when dealing with a range of site issues. Create a child theme for your changes. Once your child theme is active, we should be able to help with the customisation.

I don’t know how to create a childtheme and to be honest is seems like a lot more work than merely tweaking the three things I am. Thank you for the warning though.
